Sandy Skoglund
Shimmering Madness, 1998
Shimmering Madness, created by New York-based artist Sandy Skoglund, is an installation of two jellybean-covered figures posed on a jellybean floor, surrounded by walls that are densely covered with moving, hand-painted butterflies.
Because Skoglund's goal is to be in contact with reality while at the same time changing it, she hopes to transport the viewer into the realm of the surreal. By incorporating thousands of jelly beans, Skoglund redefines the concept of what is precious and beautiful in art. She reminds us of the sometimes artificial nature of our world through her playful arrangement of jellybeans, butterflies and dancing figures whose heads have been placed backwards.
