Going Through The Wildnerness:
For Kentucky-bound pioneers, the journey through the wilderness -- a 195-mile distance between settlements -- was a risky one. Travelers believed they could easily get lost or attacked by American Indians, who, because they still considered Kentucky their land, were inclined to war against the settlers.
Leaving behind friends and family, often never to see them again, pioneers suffered from loneliness and felt uncertain about what lay ahead. Hunger, harsh weather, rough passage, and disease contributed to the difficulties of the trip. Loss of life, whether from illness or injury was a reality, but more people than not reached their destinations.
