Schulz counted Bill Mauldin as one of his artistic heroes. During World War II, Schulz read the Stars and Stripes and closely followed the adventures of Willy and Joe, Bill Mauldin's popular soldier characters. Schulz greatly admired Mauldin's work, and realized after carefully studying it that he wasn't ready to produce drawings of that quality.

After World War II, Schulz was hired as an instructor at Art Instruction, Inc. (where he had taken a correspondence cartoon course while a senior in high school). There he worked with a talented group of people who influenced his art, and his taste in music and literature.
