In fact, it's not at all clear that Benjamin F. Wade, lame-duck senator from Ohio and next in line for the presidency, would have cast his vote to convict, if he knew that it would carry him into the office.
He DID vote. But by then, he knew that conviction had failed.
One of the few nice things about not being called till the end of the alphabet.
