The Overland Campaign:
For another month after Spotsylvania the armies would battle their way south -- across the North Anna River, to Cold Harbor, and across the James River -- until finally they locked in a nine-month siege at Petersburg. After the fall of Petersburg and Richmond in early April 1865, the end of Appomattox Court House came swiftly.
Between the opening shots at the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 and Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865 -- 340 days -- hardly a day passed without bloodletting in Virginia.
