One of the headboards in the photo below is different than the others. It is the grave of Sergeant Richard Ross of the 40th New York, killed in the fighting on the Orange Plank Road on May 5. Look closely: someone took the time to draw a dove above his name, an uncommon expression of affection in the battle's aftermath. Ross, from New York City, left behind a wife, Eliza, and a two-year-old daughter, Catherine. Today, Sergeant Ross is buried in grave #3994 in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery.
