On to Richmond:
Thirteen days of brutal suffering (more than 4,000 dead; 27,000 wounded and captured) produced no decisive victor at Spotsylvania Court House. But this was a new war, and stalemate deterred Grant not at all. Instead of retreating back across the Rappahannock, as those before him had, Grant pulled out of his lines at Spotsylvania and turned south, toward Richmond.
In the wake he left a trail of devastated and hallowed ground unmatched in North America.
