A tall, brawny fellow, was seen to throw down his musket and pick up a hatchet. As a Federal comes at him with a bayonet, he pushe[s] it aside with his left hand, while with the hatchet in his right he brains his opponent. Others, seeing the advantage of the hatchet as a weapon of defense, followed his example, while the Federals shrank from the sickening scene.
