Spotsylvania
Three days of fighting at Fredericksburg.
Five days at Chancellorsville.
Three days at Gettysburg.
Two days at the Wilderness.
Thirteen days of fighting at Spotsylvania Court House.
As the armies marched south from the Wilderness toward Spotsylvania Court House on May 8, 1864, they crossed an unseen threshold, entering into an experience that even seasoned veterans did not know. For thirteen days the armies grappled over a simple crossroads at Spotsylvania Court House. As its easiest moments, the battle was an exercise in deadly, dirty tedium. As its most intense, it produced combat unlike anything seen in America -- before or since.
