Lee to the Rear!
Time and again in May 1864, Lee faced crises unlike any he had yet confronted. On the morning of May 6 at the Wilderness, as his lines collapsed before a massive Union attack, Lee attempted to lead Texans into battle across the Tapp farm. The Texans were willing to fight, but not with Lee in front of them. "Lee to the rear!" they yelled. Lee retired, and his veterans plunged forward, turning the battle against the Union army on the Orange Plank Road.

The monument to the Texas Brigade at the Widow Tapp farm.
