A Home In Flames:
Fighting raged around the Chancellor House on May 3. At the height of the battle, the house caught ire, killing many wounded Union soldiers and forcing the family and other refugees to flee the basement. The ruins of the home stood as the most recognizable landmark on the battlefield for years before the house was rebuilt in 1872, only to burn again in 1927.
