A Nighttime Volley Fells Jackson
In the moonlight darkness of May 2, 1863, at the height of what many have called his greatest achievement -- his devastation flank attack against the Union Eleventh Corps -- Stonewall Jackson rode along a narrow woods road that is today near the visitor center. As he returned from a reconnaissance, a volley from Confederate troops along Bullock Road flashed through the forest. Jackson fell, wounded in three places.
Later that night surgeons amputated his arm. He died eight days later, on May 10, 1863.
