In the spring of 1863, the struggle to tip the balance of civil war came to the fields and woods around Chancellorsville. For six days in May, the eyes of the world settled here. Two armies -- one of immense size led by a new commander, one half as large led by an emerging legend -- waged savage combat that reverberated through the nation.
Bloodier battles would come, but none before matched Chancellorsville.
