"Cologne Peasant"
The Cologne Peasant is the symbol of the independence of the Free Imperial City of Cologne which answered only to the Emperor. This statue was earned after the Battle of Worringer in 1288. The symbol itself has been commonly used since the end of the fifteenth century. The keys symbolize the right to control the city gates, while the threshing flail demonstrates valor in defense. The original statue is now found in the courtyard of City Hall in Cologne, Germany.
