The USS Cassin Young rescued 120 survivors of the aircraft carrier USS Princeton in October 1944 during the 2nd battle of the Philippine Sea.

A commemorative plaque presented by those grateful sailors.

The Princeton was struck by a bomb dropped by a Judy dive-bomber. A secondary explosion in the ship's magazine made it impossible to save the ship. The order was later given to units of the Fleet to sink the carrier after all personnel had been removed. Of the crew of over 1500, all but 108 men were saved.
