California Shines:
US Capitol Christmas Tree -- 2011

Shining Splendor:
As the sun rose over the chilly peaks of the Sierra Nevada on Saturday, November 5, 2011, the chosen tree sparkled with a fresh dusting of snow. Community members stood by while elders from the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians blessed the giant white fir, marking the first tribe to partner with the Forest Service in taking a Capitol Christmas tree to Washington DC.

The People's Tree:
The journey of this magnificent Sierra White Fir, Abies Iowana began in California's Stanislaus National Forest. Situated in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains and located approximately 150 miles east of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the Stanislaus National Forest is a region often referred to as the range of light.
For 118 years, this tree grew to perfection and was selected for it's [sic] height and exquisite symmetry. Harvested on November 5, 2011, the tree began it's [sic] 4,200-mile tour from the mountains outside of Sonora, California to Washington DC.
Since 1970, the US Forest Service has selected a state to furnish the US Capitol Christmas Tree. This is the fourth year California has provided the tree, the last time was in 1995. Known as the "People's Tree," this is a gift from California to the citizens of the United States.
