In this Civil War-era view taken from the Capitol, the whitewashed buildings of Armory Square Hospital on the Mall are visible at center, with the main portion of the canal (today's Constitution Avenue) to the right. The canal then turns left (southeast) at the foot of the Capitol on its way to the Anacostia. The tall building at center right is the Smithsonian Castle. |
