The Baltzley "Castle"
In the 1890's [sic], the two Baltzley brothers invented a splashless egg beater and became rich. They speculated in real estate along the Potomac River, building this stone castle as well as the "Charles Castle" next door to attract buyers. They founded the Glen Echo Chautauqua as well as the Glen Echo trolley line, but during the park's first season, there was a rumor that the water in the C&O Canal caused malaria. The Chautauqua failed, the Baltzleys went bankrupt, selling the Chautauqua to the trolley company which turned it into an amusement park. Their castle fell into disrepair. It has recently been restored, and now sits grandly above the old trolley route.
