The Baltzley Castle
In the 1890s, the Baltzley Brothers became wealthy after inventing a splashless egg-beater. They bought land along the Potomac River in hopes of attracting the Washington elite to build fine homes. This stone castle, in a rustle Queen Anne style, was to attract buyers. They also founded the Glen Echo Chautauqua as a further enticement but during its first cultural season a rumor spread that living near the C&O Canal could give you malaria. The Chautauqua failed and they sold it to the trolley company to become an amusement park. The castle fell into disrepair. Today, it is restored, rising above the old trolley route with a grand view of the river.
