Glen Echo Park
The stone tower at the updated art deco trolley station is all that remains of the old Chautauqua Assembly. The trolley company that bought the park added a roller coaster, bumper cars, a ballroom, and a huge swimming pool, making it a popular destination especially for servicemen during WW2. But attendance dropped with the advent of TV, and the desegregation of the park in 1965. The National Park service purchased the park in 1971 to preserve its natural setting and creating a popular center for the arts.
