The PCC Car
The trolleys on this display are models of the original streamlined cars that were designed by the Presidents' Conference Committee in 1937 to modernize the nation's streetcar systems. The design and technical features were advanced and many of these cars still operate in cities around the world. But after WW2 gas rationing, bus manufacturers convinced many municipalities that streetcars were unsafe and caused traffic jams. Buses became the standard. Today modern streetcars are returning, proving a boon to many US cities. |
