Aquatic Garden
Anderson Island 1991
The ponds of the Aquatic Garden were dug in 1974, but there was no planting design for the area. Staff gardeners were left to plant the garden as they wished. The Anderson Island (which was not developed into its current state until 1991) was originally planted with bamboo and was not accessible to visitors (staff gardeners used a boat to access and maintain the island). With a generous donation from the Anderson family, the island was cleared, and the lovely Anderson Pavilion was designed and built. The one plant the Andersons requested be planted on the island was a climbing rose, which is still thriving on the arbor.

In the 1975 photo, at left (taken from the newly expanded Azalea Garden) the Anderson Island is just visible in the distance. The bamboo had not yet been planted, so the island was completely bare.
