Ellicott City Station
Ellicott, Maryland
built 1830
Located a few miles from Baltimore, Ellicott City Station has the distinction of being the oldest train station in the U.S., and is the terminus of the first 13 miles of commercial railroad ever built in the U.S.
Constructed in 1830 by the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, the station was a key location for the railroad's freight service, as quarries in Ellicott provided B&O with a significant amount of granite.
The granite was used to build the nearby Thomas Viaduct, which is still functioning to this day. (Find the Thomas Viaduct in the center of the train room.) A National Historic Landmark, the Ellicott City Station now functions as a museum.
