ruby-throated hummingbird
Archilochus colubris
Hummingbirds consume several times their weight in nectar each day. These tiny birds use their good eyesight, long beaks, and tongues to investigate brightly colored, tubular flowers like trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) and hibiscus species. While probing for nectar, hummingbirds inadvertently collect pollen on their heads, transferring it from flower to flower.
