Two more engravings, printed about midcentury in books of eminent Americans, attest to Barney's resilient popularity. The one (above) by J. Gross, a reputable engraver of portraits, was done in 1859 for the publishers of The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. The similarities with the Isabey miniature are evident, but notice that while the French uniform is retained, American-style epaulettes and the lower arms, hand, and sword have been added. Another engraving of Barney (left) that is also reminiscent of the rendering by Isabey was published by Evert A. Duyekinck in the [sic] 1862 in the two-volume series, National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans. The setting for this seated Barney, who is wearing a French uniform, is a room replete with the accoutrements of a naval officer -- charts, globe, log book, swords, and pistols.
