1933: Hurricane!

On August 23rd, 1933, a major hurricane pushed vast amounts of seawater into the Chesapeake Bay. Ninety percent of the region was flooded with salt water. he fertility of the soil was so decreased by the salt that farmland reverted to pine trees and scrub vegetation. There were seven tomato canneries in south Dorchester in 1933 -- nearly all of which went out of business by 1938.
