Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge was officially established on January 23, 1933, when the first 8,241 acres were acquired.
Blackwater's first refuge manager was a forester named Peter Van Huizen. He established many of the management practices Blackwater still uses today -- research, law enforcement, and wildlife surveys. |
