1920s-1930s: Trappers' Shanties

Many trappers built shanties on islands in the marshes. At one time, there were 30 to 35 of these shanties in the marshes south of the refuge. Many of these shanties were very primitive. Some consisted of a simple framework covered over the tarpaper. Trappers could stay in these shanties for short periods. They set their traps in the evening and fish the traps the next morning before taking their muskrats back for skinning and stretching.
