1850: Escape to Freedom: Harriet Ross Tubman guides the first of many freedom seekers

Having escaped from slavery in Maryland in 1849 by reaching Pennsylvania, Harriet Tubman returned on several occasions to assist enslaved relatives and others who sought their own freedom. Following roads, crossing rivers, and hiding her "passengers" on the Underground Railroad in woods and marshes, she guided freedom seekers through Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, and as far as Ontario, Canada. She benefitted from "station agents" who supported and protected her along the way. As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Harriet escorted over 70 enslaved people to freedom.
