The Eastern Shore Indians' access to their hunting and trapping grounds was becoming severely limited. Skirmishes resulted, and in 1642 Maryland Governor Cecil Calvert declared war against the Nanticoke tribes, making it legal for an Englishman to gun down any Indian who got in his way. The war lasted 26 years. |
