We are always trying to learn more about how the interior of the Cottage looked during Lincoln's time.
An invoice from the spring of 1864 shows $11.00 was paid for painting in the Cottage. This was apparently not sufficient for Mary Lincoln, who then hired a local upholsterer to provide "repairs, and refitting & furnishing" -- an expense paid for by the Commissioner of Public Works that totaled over $3000.00. Eight rooms are listed on that invoice as receiving wall paper, but to date, no trace of its appearance has been found.
