The 1842 central core and east wing of the Cottage were originally roofed with slate. A standing seam metal roof was used on the 1848 addition. A slate roof and standing seam metal roof, if properly cared for, can have a life expectancy of over 75 years. At some point after the mid-20th century the original slate and metal was removed and replaced with asphalt shingles. In 2004 the asphalt shingles were removed and repairs were made to roof sheathing were removed and repairs were made to roof sheathing and framing. A careful analysis of historic photographs and nail-hole patterns in the sheathing helped determine the layout of a new standing seam, lead coated, copper roof on the 1848 addition.
