In his 1842 book "Victorian Cottage Residences" the noted landscape architect and designer Andrew Jackson Downing noted that chimney tops were necessary when "attempting to raise the character of a cottage or villa above mediocrity." The Cottage has six chimneys. The three chimneys on the 1842 central core at some point lost their decorative chimney pots which were used to increase draft and prevent rain from entering the flue. Reproduction chimney pots were installed in April of 2005.
