The original roof specifications from 1842 called for the use of a Susquehanna slate, considered at the time the best roofing material available. Susquehanna slate is nearly black in color but slate remnants found during roof repairs were mostly purple. A Vermont Royal Purple slate was considered the closest match and was installed on the 1842 central core and east wing in 2005.
