Fish Bowl:
This mural was designed and created by artist Michael William Kirby who lives in Baltimore. He has done large-scale street art all over the world.
Michael had three helpers in creating this mural which measures 35 feet wide and 65 feet long and took 20 days of painting on this parking lot surface to create.
Often, Michael uses colorful chalks to create his artwork. Because this piece was created in the late fall in Washington DC, Michael chose to instead use acrylic and latex paints so that rain or snow would not damage it as quickly.
The style involves a technique called forced perspective in which the viewer can feel as though it might be possible to fall into the depth of the picture!
While the mural was painted as a large oval, when you stand at its base, the forced perspective style makes it appear as a perfect circle, in this case, a really large fish bowl!
In this fish bowl lives a large sea creature who is swimming around an underwater castle where a lonely princess waits to be saved. The fenced border surrounding the mural was inspired by the bridge in the nearby Yards Park on the waterfront.
You can stand on the castle tower above the mural and look as though you are a part of the art! Perhaps the princess may even join you for your photo!
