The Estate of DanFlavin

Using his signature medium of fluorescent light, Flavin conjures an atmosphere of dread, aggression, and death. One fixture juts menacingly out from the corner, confronting the viewer like the muzzle of a gun. In his title, Flavin declares this minimalist sculpture a monument to those "killed in ambush," a fate and combat tactic associated withthe war in Vietnam. The dedication "to P. K." alludes to Flavin's friend, the artist Paul Katz, with whom he had discussed the human toll of the war
