Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) married Mary Custis at Arlington House in 1831. He had a distinguished career as an engineer in the U.S. Army. As executor of George Washington Parke Custis' will, Lee returned to Arlington in 1861, resigned his commission and later assumed command of Virginia's forces. |
