Arlington Cemetery; Challenger
The Space Shuttle Challenger blew up on its tenth launch on January 28 1986, killing astronauts Christa McAuliffe (a public school teacher, the first private citizen to venture into space), Francis "Dick" Scobee, Michael Smith, Judith Resnick, Ellison Onizuka, Ronald McNair, and Gregory Jarvis. Identifiable remains of the victims took awhile to obtain. Of the astronauts, Smith and Scobee are buried at Arlington. In addition, the unidentifiable remains of the astronauts were placed in an urn and buried at Arlington, with this memorial being dedicated to them on March 21 1987. |
