Bald Eagle Protection Zone
No access beyond these orange signs.
The bald eagle is once again nesting at the National Arboretum. The pair chose one of the tallest tulip poplar trees at the edge of the Azalea collections on Mount Hamilton. Bald eagles are protected from disturbance and harm -- including when they are nesting -- by the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act; therefore, the entire area around the nest is an exclusion zone and is closed to all human and dog access.
Visit the Arboretum web site (usna.usda.gov) for images of the nest and for more information about the eagles' habits.
The exclusion zone is under video surveillance: Violators may be cited; penalties include jail and fines.
