Taking Steps Toward a Better Nation:
The Newseum joins Google in commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by taking part in a citywide project that uses steps to portray people who exercised their First Amendment rights to advocate for people with disabilities.
In March 1990, protesters left behind their wheelchairs, crutches and walkers and dragged and crawled their way up the U.S. Capitol steps, chanting "ADA now!" The demonstration is considered a major turning point that led to the signing of the disability act on July 26, 1990.
The use of free speech, assembly and petition by disability rights activists followed in the grand tradition of U.S. social movements that have used First Amendment freedoms to make our nation a better place to live.
