Street artist Shepard Fairey created several of the most indelible artworks of the 2017 Women's March, which was widely attended in cities across the globe. This image was published, along with others in his We the People series, as a full-page color ad in U.S. newspapers, intended to be clipped and carried by protestors. The image is based on a portrait of Maribel Valdez Gonzalez by San Antonio, Texas, photographer Arlene Mejorado. Born in San Antonio to Mexican migrant parents, Gonzalez is a self-described "first generation Xicana educator" who studied history with an emphasis on Mexican American Studies before earning her Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership. |
