Sane Nuclear Policy

Alexander Calder's Cold War-era artwork uses President John F. Kennedy's words to raise support for the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) -- an organization founded in 1957. The quote comes from Kennedy's September 1961 speech to the United Nations General Assembly that included disarmament program proposals. Calder, known for his sculptural mobiles, created artworks related to such political causes as anti-war protests, refugee aid organizations, and presidential candidates. He served as SANE's Chairman of Artists in 1965.
