Over There

A self-described "natural-born civilian," Herblock here declares deep appreciation for those serving in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. The rifle-wielding American soldiers marching into the heat of battle loom over the tiny citizen whose good deeds on the home front, scrap-collecting, and bond promotion, lend a grace note to the scene. Hardly a militarist, Herblock nonetheless opposed the isolationist stance of the U.S. before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and supported aid to England and allies faced with Nazi aggression.
