Robert G. Stewart, 1931-2005
Robert G. Stewart, the National Portrait Gallery's first curator of paintings and sculpture, played a formative role in building the collection between 1964 to 1994. In this image, he is shown seated next to a painting of William Corcoran (1798-1888), the founder of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Stewart donated the packet he received at the 1968 NPG opening to the museum, and some of its contents are on display here.
