Jerry McAuley's Mission

In the late 1800s, much of present-day Midtown Manhattan was a slum district known as the Tenderloin. Pervasive crime and prostitution attracted civic reformers, including missionaries Jerry and Maria McAuley.

The McAuley's opened their second mission in January 1882 at 104 West 32nd Street. Hoping to lure revelers to their salvation, they named it "Cremorne" after a saloon next door.
