Sarah Childress Polk made her husband James K. Polk's political career the main focus of her life. Up until he entered the White House, she served as his private secretary, handling his correspondence and scheduling his speaking engagements. She was his most trusted advisor, and because she believed that entertainment took away from business, she relied on White House staff to handle the bulk of the hostess duties.
This portrait of Sarah Polk shows her wearing a velvet evening gown made in a contemporary Parisian style. Her hair is covered by a matching velvet turban that is similar to the headdresses favored by her close friend and fellow first lady, Dolley Madison. This choice to emulate Madison's signature headwear speaks to the strong relationship between the two women.
