Native People:
The Catawba people, a once numerous and powerful group of Native Americans, had no real place in antebellum society. Living on a reservation near present-day Rock Hill, they were dependent on the State for supplies. Decimated by disease and war, in 1854 only 84 Catawbas remained in South Carolina.
