Effects of Poison Gas on the Human Body

When the United States entered World War I, the Army Medical Department dispatched a unit of anatomists, photographers, and illustrators from the Army Medical Museum to hospitals in France to document the work of military medicine in the field. Medical illustrations and specimens would allow military medical researchers to begin addressing the devastation of gas injuries in combat. Photography was not yet advanced enough to capture the medical subtleties needed by experts stateside, so researchers relied on the anatomical specimens and artwork.
