Fort Conger
16" x 37", 2012

Site of the most tragic American Arctic expedition in history, Adolphus Greely and his 24 men landed here in 1881. When ice prevented their re-supply ship from returning for two summers, they voyaged south into the ominous darkness of winter. Only 7 men survived. In 1899, Robert Peary visited Conger during his quest for the North Pole, using Greely's camp to build these cabins that now stand as relics to a past era.
