Topographical Map of the Original District of Columbia and Environs: Showing the Fortifications around the City of Washington
E.G. Arnold's map of the city of Washington became a collector's item almost immediately after its printing in 1862. Two days after it went on sale, the War Department began confiscating copies, including the copper plate used to make the prints. Authorities feared that the map's delineation of the sixty-eight defensive forts encircling Washington, marked by red dots, would be used by Confederates to their advantage. This print is a reproduction of an original map.
